Lynch Backs Off on School Funding

Governor Lynch is doing an about-face on his recent school funding proposal.

Gov. John Lynch said yesterday he has changed his plan for education in public schools during the next two years.

His announcement came one week before local school districts vote on their 2007-08 budgets.

Lynch told reporters he wants to provide all school districts with the money they expect under the existing school funding law, plus an additional 5 percent.

The 5 percent increase would avoid cuts that current law makes next year in towns like Newport, Pittsfield and Laconia, he said.

In his budget speech last month, Lynch said he would abandon the current education formula completely and would instead increase state aid to all districts by 5 percent.

Not too surprising. Imagine what it would be like if Lynch and his fellow dems were “forced” to implement a broad-based sales or income tax by the NH Supreme Court. The spending orgy that would result would be beyond anything ever seen in New Hampshire…
