Turkey Hunting Day 2: Right Gun, No Birds
Well today was day 2 of spring turkey hunting. I’d like to say it was an eventful day but it wasn’t. I ended up walking around for most of the time as there were still trails I wanted to go down and check out here and there. I killed about three hours that way before I sat down to do some calling.
Alas, no birds responded and I didn’t see any birds anywhere. No deer or porcupines either.
Before I left I took the picture of myself wearing my camo, holding my Mossberg 935 at the park. Glad I did as otherwise I’d have no visual for today’s report. ;)
I got a response from New Hampshire Fish and Game to my question about whether or not porcupines can be eaten. They said no but I googled and Wikipedia says that some people do eat them:
“In parts of Africa and Arabia, porcupines are eaten as a form of bush meat. Porcupine meat is also appreciated in some regions of Italy and Vietnam. “
However, at the end of my hunt I dropped by a hunting store on the way home and chatted with a guy there. He said that he killed one and tried to eat it and it tasted terrible. I don’t know if porcupine meat just tastes bad or maybe he prepared it badly? Has anybody eaten one?
I bought a crow call and an owl call at the store. I can’t figure out the owl call at all, it doesn’t sound like any own I ever heard. I must be doing it wrong. The crow call isn’t bad to use. I got them so I can try to find roosting turkeys at the end of the day.
I’m too tired to probably bother tonight though. I got a bit more sun than I wanted so I’m getting sunburnt. I must remember to put on some sun block next time I go hunting.
Aaaaah well and so it goes.
Note that I’m going to get a bow from that place at some point as I want to get into bow hunting but not until after I have finished this year’s spring turkey hunt. I can’t digest a bow while I’m in the middle of it.

My Dad tried one once as a child. He says it was very tender and good, and knew many old-timers who loved them.
Give it a shot, and let us know!
