Turkey Hunting Day 5: No Birds and Open Carry

No birds today either although that was partly because I was scouting another area somebody had told me about. I blew a bunch of time trying to find it in Mont Vernon but could not locate the right spot.

I did notice how many ugly mcmansions there are in Mont Vernon now though. Ugh. I can’t stand them. Why must they clear a 500 acre tree-free radius around each of them? It’s so nasty to see these huge houses with lawns that stretch as far as the eye can see. Sorry if you own one but stop cutting all the trees down and you might find that the area is more pleasant to be in. Your giant-lawn-from-hell just ends up looking ridiculous to people driving by.

Okay, back to turkey hunting…so no birds today. I did get a lead on another place though so I’m going over there shortly to check it out and I’ll scout it tonight if I find it’s a good spot.

I have been open carrying as my camo pants simply do not work well with my usual way of conceal carry. For those who don’t know, open carry of firearms is legal and constitutional in New Hampshire. You cannot be arrested for it and you don’t have to hide your firearm because a masshole or two freaks out about it. And you can’t do it in France! ;)

At first I was a bit self conscious about it but now I’m getting used to it and it’s feeling pretty good. I put gas in my car yesterday while open carrying and today I went into my favorite little convenience store in Milford to get a sub and a soda.

People did notice a bit but nobody freaked out. I was chatting with one of the guys behind the sandwich counter and he asked if I killed turkeys with my pistol. I said no, I need a shotgun for that. Heh, heh.

I can’t imagine ever doing this in Boston or anywhere in MA. New Hampshire is so much better and so different than living in the People’s Republic. The quality of life on things like this make this just such a better place to be.

BTW, that law on open carry gets weird as it relates to cars though. Apparently you can’t keep your gun loaded while open carrying in a car. This is odd but I think you can simply conceal it when you get into your car to stay within the letter of the law. As always though, check with an attorney if you want sound legal advice…don’t go by what you read on a blog on the internet. ;)

Note to the massholes: New Hampshire is NOT Massachusetts, if guns freak you out and you have a panic response to seeing one, it’s best if you stay in Taxachusetts where you belong. Or better yet, educate yourself and stop being a masshole altogether.

Learn about the Bill of Rights in the New Hampshire State Constitution and how New Hampshire’s gun laws are structured. We take our 2nd amendment civil rights seriously here and we cherish our liberty.

And most of all, please work on getting over your fear of guns. Guns are tools, nothing more and nothing less. You need not be nervous or afraid each time you see somebody with a gun that isn’t a cop. Hoplophobia is a disease that you can get over through education and practice.

The picture for this entry is of me open carrying. Note that the camera was at a bit of an angle so it makes it look like I’m leaning backward or something. I put it on my car. Next time I’ll make sure it’s at the right angle.
