Why Woodchucks Should Be Hunted
Poor kid. Probably scared the hell out of her.
A girl playing in a neighbor’s yard on Bunker Hill Road was bitten Monday by a rabid woodchuck, officials said today. The woodchuck or groundhog was caught in a fishnet by Joe DeWitt of 346 Bunker Hill Road, according to Animal Control Officer Jarlene Cornett.
She said the animal was later shot dead by police and she took it the state Public Health Laboratory to be tested. Today, the state Department of Health and Human Services announced the animal tested positive for the deadly disease.
Cornett said the child, who she declined to identify but said was about 12 years old, was playing in a neighbor’s yard. DeWitt, she said, told her the little girl was looking at his garden when the woodchuck “just came out of the grass and bit her.”

ahhh, Yeah…right…It is true one may hunt them anytime, all the time…but do bear in mind, a hunting license is still required… And, its not as easy as one might think. Woodchucks are solitary..its not like prairie dogs out in the Midwest…But, if you want to cap a few chucks, here are some pointers…you need a long shooter and a range finder is also very helpfull. As soon as you get within 75 yards of these little bastards they make for their holes. So, keep your distance…I shot one two weeks ago. The shot was from a Marlin Bolt Action .17 HMR with a BSA Sweet 17 Scope where I dialed in my distance of 125 yards. The shot was so cool! I hit him just below his left ear and made absolute brain salad. It was a true “red mist” shot I cracked up so hard. If any of you are not familiar with the 17HMR, its worth looking at for varmints like Woodchuck and Coyotes.
