Avalanche Death in the White Mountains
Very sad to hear about this. Be careful if you are going up to the White Mountains. That is very serious business. My condolences to this guy’s family and friends.
An avalanche Friday in one of Mount Washington’s steep ravines claimed the life of an ice climber from Tennessee.Search teams recovered the body of Peter Roux, 39, of Bartlett, Tenn., early Saturday morning, hours after a friend had reported him overdue from his plan to climb a gully in Huntington Ravine and return to the Pinkham Notch base camp later in the day, according to U.S. Forest Service reports.
Snow rangers began a search of lower elevations of the eastern side of Mount Washington shortly after Roux was reported missing, just before 9:30 p.m., until midnight.
Roux is the 12th person to die in an avalanche in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range since 1956, according to the Mount Washington Observatory. The last avalanche fatalities were in 2002, when two men were killed in Tuckerman Ravine.
