New Hampshire FIsh and Game Helps Feed the Hungry

While it sucks that there are deer and moose being taken illegally, I’m glad to know that the meat is not being wasted and is being used to help feed people who need it. Good job, Fish and Game.

The freezer at a local food pantry could barely be closed tight yesterday afternoon, after the delivery of more than 500 pounds of deer and moose meat.

Once or twice a year, Fish and Game conservation officers pass on to food pantries the meat from deer and moose illegally taken in and out of hunting season, as court cases are concluded. All of the game is professionally butchered and packaged.

Yesterday’s bounty included the meat of a moose accidentally shot during the October moose hunt and deer improperly taken in areas from Claremont through the North Country.

“This is a rough time of the year,” said Karen Hoyt, the Littleton outreach manager for the Tri-County Community Action Program. “In November, December and January, we get lots of donations, but it’s after the holidays now.” The calendar may say its spring, but families are feeling the effect of long, cold winter and the strain of high fuel oil costs, she said. As the cold weather lingers, she expects to see more people coming through the door.

“People are using up their fuel assistance at this point, and they owe money to the fuel companies,” she said.
