Best Fishing Site: Take Me Fishing

I’ve been looking around for good fishing sites and, while there’s a ton of them out there, a lot of them suck. Either there’s too little information or there’s enough but it’s poorly designed or maintained. Today I was lucky to find the Take Me Fishing site. The site was created and is maintained by the RBFF:

The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational angling and boating and thereby increase public awareness and appreciation of the need for protecting, conserving and restoring this nation’s aquatic resources.

RBFF is funded primarily through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The reason I like this site so much is that it really covers all of the bases for somebody trying to learn how to fish (and I am very much a novice fisherman so good fishing info is very valuable to me):

1. Where to get a fishing license.

2. Fishopedia – What kinds of fish, their habitats, fishing methods, what bait/lures to use.

3. Where to Fish – Click on the national map and you’ll be shown a list of places to fish. Very easy and practical to find a few places to get started fishing.

4. Outfitting – Where you can buy the gear you need to start fishing.

5. Fishing Techniques – How to actually fish.

6. Fishing Safety – Basic safety information when fishing.

7. State Specific Information – Easily find information about your state’s fishing rules and licenses.

Pretty much everything you need to get started fishing is on this site and it’s in one place.

The only thing that’s missing from this site is some real interaction. I’d love to see a discussion forum added to it though I can understand that that might be really difficult to do given moderation staffing requirements, etc.

If you want to get started fishing then add Take Me Fishing to your bookmark list and pass it on to somebody else who wants to learn how to fish.

So glad to see this post. I’ve been involved with building the site. In the next month, we’ll be adding a new feature that addresses the forum you request. It will be a social network for fishing enthusiasts (think Face Book, but for anglers). Folks can post pictures, videos, comment on fishiing spots etc. so be sure to visit!

Great, thanks for letting us know about the new features. I’ll be sure to check the site again, it’ll be nice if newbie anglers can connect with old salts that know their stuff.

And, again, great job on the site! One of the best sites I’ve seen in ages. I found a couple of places I’m going to try bass fishing in this week.
