Democrats Lose Seats in New Hampshire State Legislature!

It looks like the Democrats actually lost some seats in the state legislature. Despite Obamamania it looks like the Republicans in the state legislature actually did pretty well given the circumstances of this election cycle.

In year in which Democrats won by significant margins in statewide races, House Democrats are set to lose seats.

Yet, House Speaker Terie Norelli (D-Portsmouth) said that it appears Democrats will keep with House with around 220 seats, while the Republicans will end-up with around 175 seats.  The exact numbers are unclear because some towns have still not yet reported their final vote tally. The Democrats currently have 231 seats.

Another article here from the Cabinet:

Voters across the region contributed to the Democratic landslide at the top of Tuesday’s ballot, but overwhelmingly elected Republicans to represent them in the state legislature.

Huge numbers of voters turned out at the polls on Election Day to vote on 13 races, ranging from president of the United States to County treasurer.

Democratic President-elect Barack Obama has strong support from area voters, winning in Amherst, Hollis, Lyndeborough, Milford and Wilton. Statewide, Obama gained 55 percent of the vote despite Republican John McCain’s long ties to New Hampshire.

Democrats also swept to victory in the races for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and Executive Council. However, they hit a red brick wall in local races for the state legislature, with incumbent Republicans Peter Bradgon of Milford and Sheila Roberge of Bedford cruising to victory in the races for the region’s two seats in the state Senate.

In the Milford-Amherst house race for District 6, the GOP grabbed seven of the eight seats, while in house District 4, which includes Mont Vernon, Wilton and Lyndeborough, Republicans took three of four seats and knocked out incumbent Democrat Jennifer Daler.

So it wasn’t all bad for Republicans this time around here in New Hampshire and it appears that New Hampshire is a little bit less blue than before and is still a healthy purple color for the most part.
