How and Where To Buy Fresh New Hampshire Farm-Raised Turkeys

Well this story just made my mouth water…so delicious…mmmmm…a bit pricey though. But if the quality is that much better than store-bought then it might be worth forking over the extra cash.

Looking to snag your farm-raised New Hampshire turkey? Here’s the contact info for McClary Hill Farm and for Twist of Fate Farm.

Live turkeys, that is. She, like the Stewarts to the north, agrees that the fresh, local birds are superior in taste to the frozen grocery store equivalent.

“There’s no comparison,” she said. “It’s better quality and you’re keeping your money local.”

Supporting local farms like McClary Hill and Twist of Fate is another reason residents are scrambling to find the fresh birds, which, to no one’s surprise, don’t come cheap.

The Stewart’s birds, which are pasture-raised and fed organic cornmeal, are going for $6 per pound. Most of the birds — all toms — will grow to 20 pounds or more. That means that McClary Hill customers will likely pay at least $130 for their turkeys..

Edit: New Hampshire Living has a list of New Hampshire turkey farmers that you should definitely read if you’re in the market for a fresh, farm-raised turkey. They also have a guide to choosing the best turkey as well as Thanksgiving turkey cooking tips. And a guide on how to roast a turkey New England style.

And here’s an amusing tale from New Hampshire Magazine about one person’s quest for a fresh, farm-raised New Hampshire turkey that…er…didn’t quite work out the way she expected. Well she got one but…um…well I don’t want to give away how the story ends so you should just read it yourself. Heh.
