Democrat Tries to Raise New Hampshire’s Gas Tax

Before they even consider raising the gas tax in New Hampshire they need to stop using the money they are taking from it for non-road and non-bridge spending. Until that changes the gas tax should remain exactly where it is right now. Rep. David Campbell ought to be ashamed of himself for even considering raising the tax, particularly now while the economy is in such tough shape.

Rep. David Campbell, who has chaired this year’s committee to study the highway fund, has said he will sponsor a gas-tax-increase bill. He said he hasn’t sorted out all the details – including how big a raise he’ll support – because it’s not clear how much federal aid the state will receive. But, he said, he’s come to believe that cutting alone won’t right the road budget.

“At some point you can’t cut the highway fund any more,” said Campbell, who is not related to the transportation commissioner. “Are you going to cut winter salt? Are you going to cut snowplowing? Are you going to cut paving?”

I also find it highly amusing that Democrats like Campbell are harping on how gas tax revenues have declined due to people cutting back on their driving. Aren’t Democrats the ones running around and whining about how “we’re addicted to oil” and how cars are “destroying the planet through global warming.”

The irony is delicious. People cut back on driving and the politicians want to raise gas taxes and raise the price of gasoline even more. Is it me or is there a logic disconnect going on with these people? They appear unable to see how silly they look in this situation.

If you have a moment, please contact Representative David Campbell and tell him that he’s wrong to try to suck a little more blood out of New Hampshire taxpayers. Here’s his contact information:

Home Address:

And be sure to notify your own legislators and also contact Governor Lynch. Let them all know that you are opposed to raising yet another tax in New Hampshire.

Edit: Here’s some more background on David Campbell from Project Vote Smart. Apparently he got a D rating from the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance. So that tells you quite a bit about the kind of politician he is. Certainly someone to be watched carefully as he obviously trends toward authoritarian government and probably could not care less what taxpayers think.
