Avalanche Warning for the White Mountains

If you’re going up there you better make sure you’re prepared:

The White Mountains are living up to their name this week and if a hike is on the list of ways to work off the turkey, the advice is to be prepared.

The U.S. Forest Service has issued an early general avalanche advisory for Huntington and Tuckerman ravines. The state Fish and Game Department advises that conditions at the higher elevations are far different than they were a few weeks ago.

“New Hampshire’s woods and mountains are a great place for recreation any time of year, but each season brings with it special challenges and hazards,” said Fish and Game Lt. Todd Bogardus.

“Frankly, the nature of the mountain environment is that it can be a dangerous place. Hikers who are looking forward to an autumn mountain adventure have to realize that winter conditions come early to the mountains, so they have to be prepared for trail conditions that are very different from those they may have enjoyed in summer or early fall.”

Be sure to visit the Hike Safe site before you go out hiking especially in the White Mountains in winter.
