Enter Former Governor John Sununu, Exit Fergus Cullen

Sununu is going to do it:

Two days after announcing his run for state Republican Party Chairman, the 69-year-old former governor was en route to a meeting of the Cheshire County Republicans yesterday evening. He laid out his mission like this: to help his party “save the state from the Democrats,” who “have increased spending unbelievably.”

“I think the state of New Hampshire is in serious trouble,” he said. “And I think one of the ways of resolving some of its problems is to revitalize the Republican Party and, frankly, try and help the Republican Party get back in control of the Legislature and governor’s office.”

I’m very glad to see this happening. The Democrats really have gone way off the deep end with spending. Now that Bush’s term is finally coming to an end a giant weight will be lifted from the state Republican party. Let’s face it, Bush has been a drag on the Republican party for the last two election cycles and he has pushed many independents into voting Democratic. Quite a few seemed to do so not seeming to understand the difference between state and federal Republican office holders. Hopefully that will now change with Bush leaving office.

I want to note here though that Fergus Cullen did as good a job as anybody could have during the last election. He’s gotten a bum rap from pissy people that want to blame him for how things turned out. But let’s not forget that the Republicans picked up 17 seats in the NH House and held the line in the state senate. Not too shabby, all things considered. So thank you Fergus for your service to the state.

So here’s hoping that former Governor Sununu will be able to revitalize the party and make it more competitive in 2010. New Hampshire is careening toward a broad-based tax and voters need to put the brakes on before it happens. If it does it will be the end of life in New Hampshire as we’ve known it.
