Republican Hypocrisy and Self-Contradiction At GraniteGrok

GraniteGrok had some criticism for one of Fergus Cullen’s new columns and, in the process, engaged in some hypocrisy and self-contradiction.

When talking about school choice, Skip at GraniteGrok waxed on about how “Choice & freedom = enhanced individual liberty” but when it came to gays getting married then it suddenly became simply a “…a left-wing social cause.”

Isn’t this really the problem with the Republican party here in New Hampshire and at the national level? They proclaim that they want “individual liberty” but not when it comes to gays, pot smokers and other apparently undesirable types. They want liberty for their familes and their lives but not for other people especially if other people’s liberty conflicts with certain Republicans belief in a particular deity or holy book or whatever.

This is the reason why I am not a Republican (or a Democrat though that’s a slightly different story) and it’s one of the reasons why the Republicans have lost ground here in New Hampshire. The mean-spirited and nasty attitudes of some Republicans as they clutch their bibles and wave them frantically in the air while bashing gays pretty much makes me sick to my stomach.

At some point I hope that the Republican party gets over the whole gay marriage thing and lets it go because it is such a loser of an issue for them. It just drives people, particularly here in the northeast, away from their party.

And dont assume that I’m some kind of radical who pushes gay marriage and all of that stuff. I think marriage is an awful institution for anybody to be trapped in. I have seen so many unhappy marriages and miserable people that I truly question why any sane person – gay or straight – would want to bother chaining themselves to another person. Yeah, yeah…I understand there are legal issues, benefits, etc. but is it really worth it given how many marriages end up ending so badly? My answer is no, I don’t think it’s worth it at all. But then I’m more of an independent type anyway.

For some gays marriage is the holy grail. They want it desperately – partly for rights and benefits but also partly for societal affirmation. Well be careful what you wish for as you might just get it someday only to find out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Anyway, shame on GraniteGrok for being such hypocrites on this issue.
