While driving home on rt 4 in Durham NH I saw a cougar in a field. I new it as soon as I saw it and I told my family about it after it happened. There is no missing the long tail and I got an excellent look at him. Unfortunately I did not have a camera with me and I do not remember exactly when this took place however I believe it was in late 80's or early 1990's

I remember the fire in the early 50s. National Guard was called in and spent some time there fighting the fire. My parents (Herman and Ruth Rogers) drove vehicles to distribute food to those fighting the fire. I also recall helping my mother and others make sandwiches at our kitchen table for the firefighters before the fire got out of hand and other help needed to be called in.

why not have a hunting season befor they become a problem. They are an agressive and dangerious animal. I would have a long season with no limit to try to eradacate the species from this area. they are not a native species and will disrupt the ecoligy to this area. At the least they should be culled out by the state with the meat going to the food banks.

As someone who hunts wild boar in California, I have seen first hand the damage they can do to the land if the population gets out of hand. With that being said, if you open up a season, make sure you have enough to sustain multiple seasons. Also, the meat is delicious!!!

The boars used to get out-a good friend of mine had a stable very near the park and they were always loose. A lot of neighbors complained about it. I do not think fencing-barb wire i believe-can be called hunting or a sport. I used to raise chukar partridges and quail and a man my dad knew collected the eggs. When I found out they were going to a game reserve in Massachusetts I stopped raising them! I don't even think they let people hike in the 20,000 acres at all. I used to like a certain politician from Mass. until I found out he was a member. Diane

Diane:

I agree Corbin Park would have made a great national or state park. I am not against hunting it is necessary to keep the balance so animals will not over populate. I saw the pictures the fences looked rather worn in places not very secure. It was probably the photographs but being the large place it is that is alot of fencing to monitor. I wonder if they have cougars in there and some have managed to escape? The history of Corbin Park is interesting but I don't like what they consider hunting.
However, I guess they need to keep their animals from over populating also. At any rate, it is what it is!

@ diane:
Thankfully that's not what it is like at all. It's very, very large. Large enough for you to get lost in and not be found.

I invite you to contact the current park manager and see about a visit. I have very fond childhood memories of Corbin.

Yes, my grandfather is Kneiland.

Craig, if you'd like to trade emails I would be happy to do just that. My email should be able to be found on here.

@ Sandra L.Morrison:

I have heard about Corbin Park for many years. Never realized how large it was. Don't like these places and what they do or what they stand for. Just plain organized slaughter so someone with lots of money can have a head to hang on a wall somewhere. Whatever!

I used to drive by the house as a teenager in the late 50's, early 60's. We called it the "psycho house"-great to see pictures of it now. Corbin Park was where Gov. Merrill was told about some escapades relating to Judge John Fairbanks-he denied being told but it did eventually come out in the courts. I was the first known person to complain about the judge. Great website!

You should not have a choice to drive overly huge and wasteful SUV's when it effects the price I pay for gas. As demand for gas rises so does the price. I guess that means your 13 mile a gallon SUV is using a lot of gas!! I live in Friendswood, Texas where literally 80% of the people drive huge ass SUV's. Whats wrong with you people? You buy something so huge that has no type of practicality to it save for once a year if ever? You cant defend your deplorable actions and you guys literally show the rest of the world just how ignorant and stupid you are. America controls just 2% of the oil in the world yet uses 25% of the worlds oil. These ugly ass huge wasteful vehicles are an American phenomenon that puts people and the environment in danger. And no, SUV's are not safer than your average compact car. Do your research. SUV's should be banned. Especially when there is only one occupant in the car as that is often the case 95% of the time. Stop making these POS vehicles.

I'm considering doing the same... I've always known this state sucked, but it was my home. The LTC restrictions are the final straw; Preventing law-abiding (high)-tax-paying citizens WHO WANT TO LEGALLY OWN A GUN FOR PROTECTION against those who thumb their nose at the law with their illegal guns, because the local police want nothing to do with the problem until the dust has cleared and all they need to do is pick up the bodies, makes me ashamed of anyone involved in government and law enforcement here.

Hold on I'll brb, gotta pay more taxes and get my constitutional rights denied, while on the drive over getting spit on and robbed by deval...

Oh. I'm not bitter at all.

Jim, Thanks for your interest, advise, and ready response to my blog. Finances permitting, I am planning to purhase a quite comprehensive publishing package from AuthorHouse later in the fall, or early next year. The package I could afford includes hook-ups with google and Amazon search machines, but in the meantime, the information you provided enables my research before the fact. For your interest, and for others who may peruse our blogs, I have prepared chapter by chapter synapses of the books 6 chapters.

Title: Blue Mountain Bill

Chapter I: " How It Came To Be". A historic sketch on the orgins of Corbins Park and the life and death if Austin Corbin II.

Chapter II: : " Old Goggle Eyes". A humorous tale of "Uncle Bill" as hunting guide for an elderly gentleman friend of an early Club member out to bag a bull elk, who wore spectacles with glass 1/2" thick, and carrying a rifle, large hunting knife, and large bag containing food and a bottle of whisky, which he consumed at every juncture. Half blind and drunk when he shot 5 times at a trophy bull elk, the elk finally went down. As he ends the story about the slain elk, Uncle Bill reports, " Thats 'bout all there is to it fellers, 'cept the funny part of it was that Old Goggle Eyes, who could'nt see nothin, never knew that I shot my gun. Its better so, ain't it?".

Chapter III: " The Buffalo". Uncle Bill takes the narrator to feed the Park's buffaloes. A fascinating account featuring a " how to do" on crating buffaloes for transport to city zoos, and historic sketches on Ernest Harold Bayne's semi-successful efforts to training growing calf buffaloes to wear a yoke and pull a wagon, and Mr. Corbin's totally unsuccessful attempts to breed black domestic cows imported from Scotland with "Ol' Cleveland" (the bulls in the Park were named after the Presidents).

Chapter IV: "Over the Fence". Uncle Bill, the private investigator tangling with poachers taking deer and elk out of the Park. Dangerous encounters
, tough poachers from the Meridan side of the fence, and knocked out with a poacher's gun barrel, Uncle Bill pursues and makes private settlement with a doctor accomplice in "one of them big cities down country".

Chapter V: " Wild Hogs on the Loose". Venison dinner at Uncle Bill's, with the full story of how he bagged 19 European wild boars who escaped the Park over two winters circa 1915-1916. Day and night stalking excursions, baiting and shooting from his bedroom window with 8 rifles at once, and in dead pursuit out of their den on snowshoes in deep snow, this is the "how to do" on hunting the elusive and rangy European wild boar.

Chapter VI: " Honey Bee Fever". A slight departure from the rest. Uncle Bill Barton, jack of all trades in the pre-depression era, and especially thereafter, was also a beekeeper, whose uncanny instinct for the ways of nature enabled to use the flight patterns of wild bees to find bee trees and extract the Queens for his own hives and production of honey (the bee swarms would follow the Queens). This is the A-Z on wild bee interactions and hierarchies.

My Grandfather,William Freeman Jenney, was a hunting guide and caretaker at Corbins Park from its inception in 1890 into and perhaps through the 1920's. While bedridden prior to his death in 1943, my Grandfather wrote extensively about his adventures and experiences working in the park, and from these writings, conveyed 6 chapters of his book to my mother, who later in life gave them to me, in the hopes that they could be published someday. Now in retirement, for fun and possible profit, I have sought the consul of a self publishing consultation service to produce a compilation of my Grandfather's first person accounts of his experiences in the Park, with original pictures of himself and my Mother with wild boar he shot as part of his job when the boar escaped from the park (he shot 19 boar over two winters applying various ingenious hunting techniques depicted in his chapter "Hogs on the Loose". The book I produce will also include biographical information on my Grandfather and mt Uncle Bill's detailed account of the successful mink farming business he and my Grandfather engaged in beginning with a female mink my Grandfather trapped in Corbins Park. Upon your review of my intentions to publish the book described I would appreciate your feedback as it relates to the marketabilty of such a venture.

This place is fantastic. My grandfather managed this land when I was growing up. It's really something to see when you wake up in the morning and there are wild boar grazing on the front lawn.

Well someone threw a stick at it. Yeah, it's dumb to get close to wild animals, but what idiot throws a stick at one? From other stuff I read, she claims a group of teenagers were off to the side, out of camera view (of course) and they threw the stick.

I'll tell you what, I have lived in Massachusetts most of my life and I hate the welfare state!! I am plotting right now to buy a mobile home somewhere in New Hampshire, buy a few guns, and leave those Massachusetts bureaucrat fucks behind. Hopefully within a year or two I will make the move. I have always liked the freedom aspect of NH.
